5:18 pm: Several down moments (read: television awards), so we’ll pass along a notable line from George Clooney on the red carpet, who tells 24 Frames’ Amy Kaufman that he doesn’t mind the rain because ‘I enjoy watching journalists with trash bags on their heads.’

5:24: As Paul McCartney gives out an animation award on stage, Mo’Nique comes backstage. She quotes, of all people, a conversation with Al Roker. (She told him before the show that she didn’t want to write any speech. ‘When they call my name, if they call it, we’ll just let it happen.’)

The supporting-actress winner goes for the socially-conscious comment on molestation: ‘We walk away from it and we don’t address it...we continue to have a damaged life. It’s time for us to heal, and be survivors, and no longer be victims.’ She later says, ‘It goes beyond any economic bracket’ and quotes an ‘Asian brother’ who tells her about abuse after a screening.

Those hoping for a tabloid moment don’t get their wish, though, as she replies to a reporter pushing her on the Rihanna-Chris Brown incident with ‘How Rihanna handled it is the way she chose to handle it. Stop trying to catch me, baby.’ All in all, a fairly well-handled backstage performance (save for one reference to ‘bathroom talk’ with her husband -- don’t ask), especially given how much sturm und drang there had been about her not wanting to play the awards game.
