Eastman files suit over ‘assistant attorney general’ title

The fight over a Republican attorney general candidate’s description on the June ballot is heading to court.

Republican John Eastman chose his own ballot description, ‘assistant attorney general,’ for the race. What Eastman didn’t say was that the job title is one he holds in South Dakota. Eastman, the former dean of Chapman Law School, was given the title while he helps the state of South Dakota on a case

Secretary of State Debra Bowen, a Democrat, rejected Eastman’s request, saying it was misleading to voters, who may assume that he was an assistant attorney general in California.

Eastman’s campaign has filed suit in Sacramento Superior Court to have the ballot title reinstated.
