Laura Myers is at Angel Stadium and will be live blogging from tonight’s All-Star Home Run Derby, and we will have this handy chart, below, to help you keep track of the results. The top four advance to Round 2, and the top two from that round advance to the finals.
Round 1: The first round is off to a lousy start, with Chris Young and Vernon Wells combining for three homers. One was a gift when a fan reached over the railing and grabbed one of Wells’ fly balls. He was credited with a homer. Corey Hart then woke up the crowd by bombing 13 homers, many of them over 450 feet. Matt Holliday has the longest homer of Round 1 so far, hitting one 497 feet. Coincidentally, 497 is the best guess as to how much Boston’s David Ortiz weighs. He advanced to the second round with eight homers. Also advancing: Hart, Hanley Ramirez and Miguel Cabrera.
Round 2: Ortiz comes alive, hitting 13 homers, many of them towering shots. First-round leader Hart hit a big zero in Round 2, and he was eliminated.
Final Round: Ortiz sets the bar high, hitting 11 homers. Can Ramirez beat that? Nope. Ortiz is the champ.
