UCLA basketball: Bruins lead Eastern Washington at halftime, 28-18

UCLA is without its second-leading scorer, as Travis Wear is in the hospital because of a skin infection on his left foot. But it doesn’t look like the Bruins are missing him against Eastern Washington.

The Bruins lead, 28-18, at halftime.

For whatever reason, Eastern Washington ran a clock-killing offense early in the first half.

The Eagles spread the court on most possessions and didn’t even begin to run a play until there were about 10 seconds left on the 35-second shot clock.

The plan didn’t seem to work so well. Behind two consecutive three-point shots from Lazeric Jones, the Bruins used an 15-2 run to take a 21-7 lead with 5 minutes 32 seconds left in the first half.

Jones has 11 points at halftime to lead UCLA.

UCLA’s defense, which was more man-to-man than zone, stifled the Eagles with ease for much of the first half. Eastern Washington had a stretch in which it didn’t score for 6:24.

In case you’re curious, the lowest point total by a UCLA opponent at the Sports Arena when the Bruins are the home team is 41.

That figure was put up by Denver in a 70-41 loss to UCLA on Nov. 30, 1962.
