Baseball: Mater Dei-Capistrano Valley showdown set

The championship game of the Newport Elks tournament can’t get much better than this: Top-ranked Santa Ana Mater Dei (4-0) against No. 3 Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley (3-1) on Friday at 6 p.m. at Hart Park in the city of Orange.
Mater Dei improved to 4-0 Wednesday with a 3-0 victory over Santa Ana Foothill. Aaron Northcraft threw a five-hit shutout and Derek Campbell hit a three-run home run. Capistrano Valley defeated Orange Lutheran, 5-1, on a four-hitter by Tyler Matzek, who also homered. Matzek struck out seven and walked none in an impressive performance.
Unranked Santa Monica improved to 3-0 with a 6-5, nine-inning victory over Taft in the Southern California Invitational.
Los Osos got two triples and four RBIs from Arby Fields in a 9-3 victory over Silverado in the Chino tournament.
Aquinas got three home runs from Jimmy Jones in a 24-1 victory over Eastside Christian.
