Best in the nation?
For the Mater Dei boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, the cold reality is this: They’re not even the best in Southern California.
Four days after Fairfax toppled the Mater Dei boys’ team in a Southern California Division I regional quarterfinal, Brea Olinda knocked off the previously unbeaten Mater Dei girls’ team, 44-38, this afternoon at Pauley Pavilion in the Southern California Division II regional championship.
Senior guard Jonae Ervin scored 18 points and junior guard Kelsey Harris had 12 for the second-seeded Wildcats (32-2). Sophomore guard Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had 10 points on four-for-16 shooting for top-seeded Mater Dei (32-1), which committed 29 turnovers and made only two of 13 three-pointers.
