Here’s some advice for high school teams coming to play at Pauley Pavilion in future seasons: Don’t bother with three-pointers.
Long Beach Poly and Ontario Colony are the latest teams to struggle from long range in the early going of the Southern California Division I regional championship tonight at Pauley Pavilion. The Jackrabbits made one of seven three-point attempts in the first half and the Titans made one of three attempts from long range. Colony held a 25-21 halftime lead.
The other scary statistics from earlier today: The Loyola boys missed ALL 16 of their three-point attempts during a 68-62 loss against Eisenhower and the Eagles weren’t much better, making seven of 30 attempts; the Harvard-Westlake boys made only one of 14 attempts during a 79-63 loss to Ocean View; and the Mater Dei girls made only two of 13 attempts during a 44-38 loss to Brea Olinda.
Only the Ocean View boys have had success from behind the arc, making 10 of 18 attempts. Coaches talk about the big arena setting and the pressure of championship games as excuses. Whatever the reason, fewer attempts is usually better when it comes to three-pointers here.
