A gunman opened fire on police officers investigating a traffic accident in South-Central Los Angeles on Saturday night, inflicting minor injuries on the officers and seriously wounding a motorist they were questioning.
The unidentified motorist was in stable condition at County-USC Medical Center, with a stomach wound. The officers were treated and released.
Police Sgt. Dennis Sebenick said Officers Scott Browning and Walter Attlesley, both 39, were handling a collision between two automobiles at the corner of 80th and Main streets. One driver had already been sent to a hospital, and the officers were performing a field sobriety test on the other, when shots were fired by a gunman standing across the street.
An intensive search of the area failed to turn up the gunman, but a handgun was found, Sebenick said.
