Fire Kills Nine Occupants of Washington Basement

WASHINGTON — Nine people were killed and seven others, including four children, were injured when fire swept through a row house in northwest District of Columbia early Sunday, authorities said.
The dead and injured were reported to be transients living in the basement of the building. Authorities said the fire apparently was started by a water heater explosion.
