Yelena Valova and Oleg Vasilyev won the first gold medal at the European figure-skating championships at Copenhagen and led a Soviet sweep of all the medals in the pairs competition.
Valova and Vasilyev won their third European title and added to the golds they acquired at the 1984 Olympics and at the world championships of 1983 and 1985.
The silver medal went to last year’s world junior champions, Yekatarina Gordeyeva and Sergei Grinkov, while the third Soviet pair, Yelena Bechke and Valeri Kornyenko, took the bronze.
