More on Prop. 13

The letters defending Proposition 13 reflect a not-so-amazing public ignorance of California’s assessment and property tax procedures.

The minority of property owners who have been frozen into 1978 assessments has now become a “special interest” which screams long and loud when its favored status is threatened.

What is needed is restoration of the ad valorem system that was in existence on March 1, 1978, with tight control over the tax rate. This would restore fairness to California’s property tax.

But, let’s face it: Just as the special interests have skunked up income tax reform, so will the fat cats who constitute the Pro-Proposition 13 special interest skunk up property tax reform.
