Chapman College continues to struggle, and the Panthers found another way to lose Saturday night as Cal Poly Pomona rallied to a 68-57 California Colligate Athlectic Assn. win in Kellogg Gym.
The Panthers (1-6, 5-14) led by one, 43-42, with 8:41 left in the second half, but their poor shooting caught up with them as the Broncos won going away. Chapman shot just 34%, making only 21 of 62 field goal attempts in the game. Cal Poly Pomona were considerably more accurate, shooting 58% (28-48).
Junior center Karl Tomkins (who finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds) led the Panthers to a one-point first half lead, 25-24, but Cal Poly Pomona came on in the second half.
Guard Darron Suttle helped the Broncos’ comeback with 17 points and center Gregg Brofer added 15 as Cal Poly Pomona (2-5, 11-9) won for only the second time in conference.
Cal Poly Pomona also got a good performance from guard Ron Bailey. The junior from Canyon High School scored 11 points and had 10 assists.
