No Damages for Man Shot Chasing Robber

LINCOLN, Neb. — A man who was shot and wounded while chasing a fleeing armed robber cannot collect damages because he voluntarily chose “to be a vigilante,” the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled Friday in a unanimous decision.
Takeo Utsumi, an employee of a Grand Island restaurant that was robbed in 1980, said he began chasing the bandit after a police officer refused to do so. The robber fired at Utsumi, and a bullet struck him in the right leg.
