The state’s Supreme Court denied Texaco’s attempt to disqualify State District Judge Solomon Casseb Jr., who presided over the final eight weeks of Pennzoil’s suit against Texaco. The trial ended in November when jurors held that Texaco deliberately interfered in a merger agreement between Pennzoil and Getty Oil before Texaco acquired Getty in 1984. Jurors awarded Pennzoil $10.5 billion in damages. Casseb affirmed the jury’s award in December. Texaco had requested the court to force a hearing on the company’s attempt to have Casseb disqualified. Casseb was appointed as a “retired judge,” but Texaco said he had not served enough time as a judge to qualify as a retired judge.
