San Marino : Hiring Freeze Ordered

The San Marino Unified School District Board of Education has imposed a hiring freeze and a spending freeze on all contracts and supplies in what members said is the first of several cutbacks to meet a budget shortfall of more than $600,000.
The board’s list of 13 cost-saving proposals also includes combining some elementary school classes, closing school and district offices during Christmas and spring breaks and closing the district warehouse.
Other proposed cutbacks still under study by the board and administration include eliminating some arts, physical education and music programs in elementary schools, laying off some teachers, administrators and clerks and selling excess property.
The board also asked for a community-based study on a proposal to have the district’s two elementary schools serve students in the first six grades, rather than five, in order to reduce the size and staffing of Huntington Junior High School.
