Gordie Stewart scored two goals in the third period to give U.S. International University a 4-3 victory over Alaska Fairbanks in a Great Western Hockey Conference game at the Mira Mesa House of Ice Wednesday night.
Stewart scored 44 seconds into the final period to give the Gulls (9-3, 18-13) a 3-2 advantage and then scored again at the 12:46 mark to increase the lead to 4-2.
Alaska Fairbanks’ Dave Colvin scored at 18:12 to make the game close, but Fairbanks could not score after pulling its goalie in the last minute.
The victory gives USIU at least a tie for the conference championship. Fairbanks (5-3, 15-4) would have to win its final four games to tie for the conference title.
