Hein Vergeer of the Netherlands defended his World Speed Skating Championship, and Norwegian skater Geir Karlstadt set a world record in the 10,000-meter race at Inzell, West Germany.
Vergeer, 24, finished second in the 1,500-meter sprint and 12th in the 10,000 meters to retain the title by winding up with the fewest points-against--161.937.
Karlstadt’s record time was 14 minutes 12.14 seconds.
