United Steelworkers and a Canadian can company failed to reach agreement in negotiations aimed at averting a scheduled strike, as a walkout by about 13,600 U.S. workers entered its second day. Steelworkers Vice President Leon Lynch said he was not optimistic that the negotiations with Continental Can of Canada Ltd. would succeed before the 12:01 a.m. Thursday deadline. Lynch said the union and the company would “discuss the possibility” of meeting again. The company’s 1,850 workers are employed at 12 plants. No talks were scheduled with four U.S. can makers, which operate 75 plants in 20 states, Lynch said.
