Third baseman Wade Boggs who was awarded a $1-million salary through arbitration last year and is asking a record $1.85 million this season, and the Boston Red Sox made their arguments in baseball’s final 1986 hearing. A decision is expected today.
Management won both cases announced Friday. An arbitrator ruled in favor of the New York Mets against infielder Tim Teufel, giving him $200,000 instead of the $350,000 he was asking. The Houston Astros will pay pitcher Frank DiPino $280,000, which is $100,000 less than he had asked.
A record 159 players filed for arbitration this year.
