Fill-in jockey Randy Romero used a left-handed whip through the stretch to beat back a late challenge by Proud Truth as Skip Trial reached millionaire status with a nose victory in the $300,000 Gulfstream Park Handicap at Hallandale, Fla.
Romero was named to ride Skip Trial after regular rider Jean-Luc Samyn lost an appeal of a suspension.
Favored Creme Fraiche, the 1986 Belmont Stakes winner, never posed a threat and finished fourth in the field of five horses.
Skip Trial paid $7.60, $4 and $3.20, while Proud Truth returned $3.40 and $3. Important Business paid $3 to show.
