The line was shorter and the crowd more orderly outside the First Public Savings Bank in Chinatown where, on Saturday, hundreds of depositors clamored for their money--withdrawing nearly $5 million--amid rumors that the institution was in financial difficulty. Officials of the bank--which the Federal Home Loan Bank Board said is sound--said they still were not sure how the rumor started. Most depositors standing in line were recent Chinese immigrants who could not read news accounts telling of the bank’s healthy financial condition, bank chairman Jack Lee said, adding that community newspapers were expected to carry similar stories in Chinese today which should put their fears to rest.
