Jackie Joyner Sets American Record in Long Jump, Loses

Jackie Joyner set an American indoor record in the women’s long jump Friday at the USA/Mobil Indoor Track and Field Championships, improving on her own record by over 5 inches, with a leap of 22 feet, 10 1/2 inches.

Joyner, of the World Class Athletic Club, set American bests in consecutive jumps, leaping 22-10 and 22-10 1/2 to break the old mark of 22-5 which she set last Friday in Inglewood, Calif.

Joyner, who turns 23 Monday, finished second in the event to East German Heike Drechsler, who jumped 23-0 3/4. Helga Radtke of East Germany took third with a leap of 22-4.

A resident of Los Angeles, Joyner is the sister of triple jumper and hurdler Al Joyner.

In other early events, Jud Logan won the men’s 35-pound weight throw, Ramona Pagel the women’s shot, Greg Tafralis the men’s shot and Mike Conley the triple jump.

The weight throws were held at Princeton University, and all other other competitions took place at Madison Square Garden.

In afternoon heats, Stephanie Hightower (women’s 60-yard hurdles), Greg Foster (men’s hurdles), Jeanette Bolden (women’s 60-yard dash), Ben Johnson (men’s dash), Diane Dixon (women’s 440), Johnny Gray (men’s 1000), East German Marita Koch (women’s 220) all qualified for the evening finals.

In the featured event of the meet, world record-holder Serguei Bubka of the Soviet Union and Billy Olson battled for the third time this season in the pole vault.

The two have combined to top the indoor record seven times this season. Bubka held the record of 19-5 3/4, which he set last Friday, entering the competition.

In other featured events, Marcus O’Sullivan of Ireland, looking for his seventh straight victory, headed a mile field that was missing Eamonn Coghlan and Sydney Maree. Jimmy Howard highlighted the men’s high jump and Canadian Debbie Brill the women’s high jump fields.

The indoor championships culminated the 15-meet $150,000 Mobil Grand Prix.
