New Delhi withdrew its candidacy for the 1992 Olympic Games, reducing the field to six cities.
An official at the Swiss headquarters of the International Olympic Committee said that New Delhi sent a message saying lack of government backing had prevented the Indian capital from pursuing its bid, but it hoped to try to land the 1996 Summer Games.
Delegations from Amsterdam; Birmingham, England; Brisbane, Australia, and Paris presented their official bids for the ’92 Summer Games at the Chateau de Vidy in Lausanne.
Barcelona, Spain, favored to win the 1992 Games when IOC members cast their votes Oct. 17, will place its bid today, two days before the final deadline. Belgrade, Yugoslavia, is also scheduled to present its bid today.
