FileNet Chooses Sperry as Domestic Distributor

FileNet Corp. of Costa Mesa has selected Sperry Corp. of Blue Bell, Pa., as the first domestic distributor of its electronic document storage and retrieval system. The deal, which will be formally announced later this week, was valued at about $20 million in its first year.
Under the agreement, Sperry has the right to distribute the FileNet system to airline, energy, telecommunications, transportation and engineering companies throughout the United States. FileNet, which maintains a staff of 20 in its six regional sales offices, has targeted financial and insurance companies for its sales efforts. In addition, FileNet last year selected Olivetti, the Italian industrial giant, to sell the machines in Europe.
The FileNet system, which was unveiled in late 1984, allows so-called “paper intensive” companies to copy their documents on optical disks and retrieve them with the aid of a computer. The systems, which sell from $300,000 to as much as $1 million, are typically used by large corporations with an enormous quantity of paper work to process and file.
Sperry will sell the FileNet system through its National Accounts Division based in Wayne, Pa.
