USD Puts a Wrap on Regular Season and Makes Its Last Pitch for NIT Bid

SAN DIEGO — The University of San Diego plays its final regular-season basketball game tonight at 7:30 in Moraga against St. Mary’s. Whether it will be the final game for USD remains to be seen.
A victory would assure USD (18-9) of third place in the West Coast Athletic Conference and may help its chances of earning a postseason bid to the National Invitation Tournament. USD beat WCAC-champion Pepperdine, then lost by only one point in the rematch. But USD’s non-conference schedule was not very strong, a win over San Diego State the highlight.
There will be no postseason tournament for St. Mary’s. The Gaels (10-16) are in seventh place in the conference.
In the teams’ first game in San Diego two weeks ago, the Gaels led at halftime before losing, 70-61. USD forward Mark Bostic scored a season-high 23 points in that game.
St. Mary’s is led by guard Paul Robertson, who is averaging 14.3 points. Scott Thompson (13.4) leads USD.
