Vandal Slashes Reagan Portrait in State Capitol

SACRAMENTO — The portrait of Ronald Reagan hanging in the Capitol halls with those of other former California governors was slashed by a vandal, requiring its removal for repair, the state Department of General Services said Friday.
“The 30-inch cut goes from the bridge of the nose to the belt line,” said department spokeswoman Susan Hogg. “It has been taken down to be repaired, and it will take several months.”
She said the portrait of Reagan by Robert Rishell was slashed sometime Wednesday. Unlike other portraits that show governors from the chest up, it depicts Reagan standing on the west Capitol lawn.
Reagan served two four-year terms as California’s governor before leaving office in January, 1975.
