Campaign Gifts, City’s Billboards
In Jeffrey Perlman’s story on the Anaheim billboard controversy (Feb. 17), I note the amounts of campaign contributions disbursed by billboard firms or their employees to the Anaheim City Council members who supported preliminary drafts of the billboard ordinance until Councilman Irv Pickler had a change of heart.
Then, in a story on the probe of Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alatorre’s use of funds (Feb. 19), I noted that Los Angeles has a limit of $500 for contributions to council candidates.
That certainly wouldn’t solve the problem of the aggressive actions of the billboard industry, but it would at least let the council members know what the people think of their vulnerability to special interests.
The least we in Anaheim can do is to get a change in our city ordinance to limit the amount of contributions the council members receive from lobbyists.
