Clothier Walter Newberger has been indicted by a San Francisco grand jury for falsifying corporate records and grand theft in connection with a scam which prosecutors claim cost the city more than $1 million. Newberger is accused of understating the gross sales of his clothing store in a city-owned structure, on which figure the store’s rent was based, said Deputy Dist. Atty. John Carbone. The charges filed against Newberger are similar to charges filed against two of the clothier’s business partners, Wilkes Bashford and Jack Gilliam, both of whom were indicted by a previous grand jury, Carbone said. Newberger is scheduled to enter a plea in San Francisco Superior Court on April 8 and, if convicted, faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $10,000 fine on each of the charges.
