Air Force Drops Jet Trainer Plan
WASHINGTON — The Air Force, citing budgetary pressures, announced today that it is canceling a $3.5-billion program to produce a new T-46 jet trainer for student pilots.
The decision had been expected, because the Air Force did not request any funds for the plane in its fiscal 1987 budget proposal to Congress. Air Force Secretary Russell A. Rourke ordered one final review, however, setting the stage for today’s announcement. The decision comes as a major blow to the Fairchild Republic Co. in Farmingdale, N.Y., a wholly owned subsidiary of Fairchild Industries Inc., which had based its future on the T-46 program. Fairchild Republic employs about 3,500 workers at its Long Island plant.
