Ampex and Sony will use identical video formats.

Ampex, the Redwood City, Calif.-based video products maker, said it will manufacture a videotape recorder for the TV broadcast industry in Sony’s Betacam format, while Sony will make a new videotape recorder in Ampex’s format for so-called digital composite recording. The companies predicted that the agreements would spur acceptance of both formats.
