Simi Valley High’s Don MacLean, who led the Pioneers to the Southern Section 4-A basketball finals, was named state sophomore of the year by Cal-Hi Sports. MacLean, a 6-9 center, averaged 21.7 points and 13.9 rebounds a game for the 27-3 Pioneers. Trevor Wilson of Cleveland High was named to an all-state team by the newsletter.
Jaime Garza, the former World Boxing Council super-bantamweight champion, will fight Jorge Diaz of Mexico tonight at 7:30 p.m. in a scheduled 10-rounder at the Hilton Riviera Hotel in Palm Springs. Garza, who grew up in Pacoima, enters the main event of the six-card night with a record of 41-1, including 39 knockouts. Diaz is 23-5, with 12 KOs. This is the first professional boxing show in Palm Springs in nine years.
