A diver who developed the bends near San Miguel Island was in stable condition at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, after being rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard. Petty Officer James MacPherson said Donald Haymes, 37, was diving off a 29-foot pleasure boat, the Misty Dawn, when he apparently ascended too quickly and developed the bends--a heavy concentration of nitrogen entering the body’s cells caused by a sudden change of atmospheric pressure. San Miguel is the northernmost of the Channel Islands chain and is 50 miles southwest of Santa Barbara.
