Chicago White Sox player representative Richard Dotson said a drug testing plan offered by Commissioner Peter Ueberroth will not succeed until a testing plan is devised with the help of the players’ association.

Dotson said he reviewed Ueberroth’s latest drug control proposals and said it differs little from anything offered in the past.

“And, until the commissioner decides to work with the players’ association, I can tell you the reaction is going to be the same,” Dotson said. “We’ve made it very clear that we want to work to control this problem. But we’ve also made it very clear the commissioner must work with us on this.”

Unless some movement is made, Dotson said the players are content to await an arbitrator’s ruling on the issue of mandatory drug testing.

“We know there is a problem, but we’re going to wait to see when the decision comes down,” Dotson said. “If he rules in favor of us, there won’t be the mandatory tests.”
