Merrill Lynch & Co., citing “unprecedented strength” in the securities markets, reported that its first-quarter profit jumped 56% from a year earlier on a 37% rise in revenue. The nation’s largest investment firm said its strong improvement in large part reflected the major rallies in the stock and bond markets in the latest quarter.
