Sylmar Hospital : Olive View to Delay Opening

The opening of Olive View Medical Center in Sylmar, scheduled for April 26, has been delayed until May 31 because final inspections are not complete, hospital officials said Wednesday.
“The hospital is 99% complete, but you can’t bring in the patients if air conditioning isn’t on yet,” said Richard Cordova, associate administrator.
The $120-million, 350-bed Los Angeles County hospital, rebuilt after it was destroyed in the Feb. 9, 1971, earthquake, was officially dedicated last month. It will replace the aging Olive View Mid-Valley Hospital in Van Nuys.
Cordova said the hospital’s medical gas systems and hot-water boilers have not been completely tested. A final inspection by the county fire marshal is also pending.
“Should any of the systems not pass or need modification or adjustment, it could delay the opening again,” Cordova said. “But we are not expecting another delay.”
Hospital officials estimate that they will be transporting 85 Mid-Valley patients to the new hospital on move-in day. All outpatient clinics now at Mid-Valley will operate out of the new hospital.
