Dow Chemical said its net income was up by 59%, and Monsanto Co. said its earnings were up by 36%. At its Midland, Mich., headquarters, Dow said the quarterly gain resulted from stringent cost-cutting measures, cheaper oil and the lower value of the dollar against foreign currencies. In St. Louis, Monsanto said its most recent results benefited from the performance of G. D. Searle & Co., which was acquired last August.
