40 Evacuated From Homes in Chemical Spill

Forty people were forced from their homes and a two-block area was closed to traffic Friday morning after seven 50-gallon drums--one of them leaking an unidentified chemical--were found dumped in a South-Central Los Angeles alley.
Two of the evacuees were taken to California Hospital complaining of dizziness and irritation of nose and throat. They were treated and released.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said the drums were discovered behind 727 E. 43rd St. Firefighters ordered the evacuation of nearby homes and closed a two-block area to traffic. The closure ended after the chemical, a petroleum byproduct of unknown composition, was removed and taken to a legal dump site by a private contractor.
