A 32-year-old Cota de Caza resident was fatally injured Saturday about 5:30 p.m. when his speeding car veered off Santa Margarita Parkway, bounced into the air, crashed down an embankment and burned, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The CHP identified the victim as Louis W. Alaniz, 32. He was pronounced dead at the scene, which was near the Portola Bridge.
The CHP said Alaniz, who was alone in the car, was driving southbound on Santa Margarita Parkway “at a high rate of speed and lost control of the car north of the bridge.” He was ejected from the car as it plummeted down the embankment, the CHP said.
The car burst into flames, and a small brush fire resulted, according to investigating officers.
