Saying that he finds it impossible to raise enough money, former state Sen. Marz Garcia abandoned his campaign for state controller in the Republican primary election and announced his support of former colleague state Sen. William Campbell of Hacienda Heights. Polls had shown Garcia behind Campbell and two other GOP candidates, Assemblyman Don A. Sebastiani of Sonoma and Dan Stanford, former chairman of the Fair Political Practices Commission. “The polls confirm that the race is between Campbell and Sebastiani and that Dan Stanford and I would have to raise an enormous sum of money to close the gap and then another enormous sum to stay in office,” Garcia said. Garcia, 49, is a financial consultant who lost his Bay Area state Senate seat in 1982 when he ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor. He said he is backing Campbell because he is “a very good friend who is exceptionally qualified. . . .”
