KANSAS CITY, Mo. — More than half of 100 stolen dynamite blasting caps were recovered Friday from New Mark Middle School students who had been selling them to each other between classes, police said.
Bomb technicians spent Friday collecting the devices from dozens of students who had obtained the caps from their classmates, police Sgt. Don Hanton said.
Thirty-five detonated and live blasting caps were found in a wooded area Friday morning, where students led police after one 12-year-old was injured in an explosion, Hanton said. Other caps were turned in by parents and students.
Several Thefts Reported
Hanton said about 100 blasting caps were taken during several thefts at an area construction site.
“Consequently a quantity of blasting caps was sold throughout the neighborhood,” he said.
Hanton said the blasting caps are small tubes of polished aluminum, a little smaller in diameter than a pencil and about three inches long.
