BRIEFLY : Simi Valley’s MacLean Invited to ABCD/Nike Program at Princeton

Simi Valley High’s Don MacLean has been invited to participate in the ABCD/Nike All-American Program June 26-July 2 at Princeton University in Princeton, N.J.

Co-sponsored by Nike and the Foundation for Academics, Basketball and Career Development, the program annually plays host to 115 of the nation’s top high school basketball players.

The program incorporates basketball with academics and career guidance. Last year, more than 200 major colleges sent representatives to evaluate the talent.

MacLean led Simi Valley to the final game of the Southern Section 4-A playoffs last season, averaging 21.7 points and 13.9 rebounds a game. The 6-9 sophomore was an All-Southern Section selection and was named co-player of the year in the Marmonte League.

Samantha Ford, UCLA

Face No. 1 Fullerton Today

Cal State Fullerton, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division I softball, plays defending national champion UCLA in a doubleheader today at 1 p.m. at UCLA.

Four former Valley-area high school players have had leading roles this season for the Bruins (17-12).

Samantha Ford, a freshman pitcher from Hart High, is 10-7 with 137 strikeouts in 122 innings. She has eight shutouts and an earned-run average of 0.50.

Freshman outfielder Karen Walker (El Camino Real) leads the team in hitting with a .333 average. Senior catcher Janet Pinneau (Granada Hills) is batting .297.

Junior first baseman Gina Holstrom (L.A. Baptist) is batting .261 and leads the team with 13 runs batted in.

Conejo Valley Wrestling Club

Sponsors Dual Meet Tonight

The Conejo Valley Wrestling Club plays host to dozens of wrestlers in an international-style dual meet at 5 p.m. today at Thousand Oaks High.

Matches will include Olympic freestyle wrestling and high school-age wrestling. .

Providence High Skater

Selected to National Team

Charles Bryan Flynn Willson King, 16, will compete in the Olympic Sports Festival in Houston, in May, as a member of the National Speed Skating Team.

King, a junior at Providence High, is the California state men’s division champion.

NOTABLE

Doni Green, coach of the Simi Valley High boys track team, has been named the Southern Section coach of the year and will be honored at this year’s state meet June 6-7 at Cerritos College. Green has coached at Simi Valley for eight years, losing just one of 63 dual meets. The Pioneers are 5-0 this season and have won 29 straight meets.

The girls coach of the year is Harry Dolen of Valencia.

Phil Lombardi, a former All-City catcher at Kennedy High, has been promoted from the minor leagues by the New York Yankees. He will replace Butch Wynegar.

Wynegar was put on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 20, after suffering a pulled groin muscle against Milwaukee.

On Monday, Lombardi joined the Yankees in Kansas City. He had been playing for Columbus of the International League.

With the Class-A team in Ohio, Lombardi was 12 for 28 (.429), including one home run and three runs batted in. In 1981, Lombardi led Kennedy to the City 4-A championship.

Jill Daniels, who led Valley College to the Mountain Valley Conference women’s basketball title, has accepted a scholarship to Fresno State. Daniels averaged 14.1 points and 13.9 rebounds a game.

Valley’s Mario Lopez, a center on the men’s team, also has signed a letter of intent with Fresno State.

Canyon High linebacker Randy Austin, the Southern Section defensive player of the year, is among 10 Valley-area football players on the South roster for the 35th Shrine All-Star game, Aug. 2, at the Rose Bowl.

Canyon’s Joe Zacharia will join Austin on the first team as will Notre Dame’s John Perak and Simi Valley’s M.J. Nelson.

Riche Swinton (Montclair Prep), Barry Thomas (Monroe), Gary Wellman (Westlake), John Libby (Hart), Mike Trevathan (Thousand Oaks) and Sal Velasco (Burbank) are on the South roster as alternates.

Pole vaulter Dave Kenworthy and hurdler Marlene Harmon are scheduled to compete in the Ninth Pepsi Invitational meet, May 17, at UCLA.

Kenworthy, 25, formerly of Crespi High and USC, won the 1982 NCAA pole vault title as a Trojan. Harmon, 23, formerly of Thousand Oaks High and Cal State Northridge, has a personal best of 58.48 in the 400-meter hurdles.
