Oakland Mayor Lionel Wilson underwent heart surgery at an undisclosed hospital. Yvonne Garcia, the mayor’s chief of staff, said Wilson’s wife, Dorothy, “called me to advise that the mayor has undergone elective and routine bypass surgery and is in excellent condition.” Mrs. Wilson was told by the mayor’s doctor that he would be able to return to work by May 19, Garcia said. The 71-year-old mayor’s heart problem was disclosed when he collapsed during an April 16 City Council meeting after what his aides said was an “accidental overdose of blood pressure medication.”
