A California Highway Patrol officer suffered major injuries Friday night when his motorcycle struck a car in Tarzana, authorities said.
Officer Dave Mattice, 26, a four-year veteran, was taken by a Los Angeles Fire Department helicopter to Northridge Hospital Medical Center with a broken leg and pelvis and back injuries, CHP Officer Tom Nickell said. A hospital spokeswoman said Mattice was in serious condition.
Mattice was westbound on Ventura Boulevard when he struck a car making a left turn from Topeka Drive onto Ventura Boulevard, Nickell said. The unidentified driver of that car was not injured.
Investigators believe that Mattice may have been positioning himself to intercept an eastbound motorcycle being pursued by CHP patrol units about a mile away on Ventura Boulevard.
