SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The landing gear on Gov. James R. Thompson’s helicopter failed today during a flight in western Illinois, but the helicopter returned safely to Springfield and no one was injured.
The problem was discovered as Thompson was about to land at Mount Sterling, a spokesman said. After trying for about 20 minutes to get the front landing gear to lower, the pilot decided to fly back to Springfield’s Capital Airport. There the helicopter hovered near the ground while Thompson and the rest of his party got off.
