China to Expand Number and Variety of Graduate Studies

PEKING — China will increase the number of its graduate programs by 50% and add new areas including environmental chemistry and biomechanics, the government’s English-language China Daily reported Wednesday.
It said an advisory group to the State Council’s Academic Degree Committee recommended that authorization be given to 2,045 departments to confer master’s degrees and 671 for doctorate degrees. The newspaper said 739 new subjects have been added to the graduate programs.
China began giving graduate degrees in 1981. The report said that by September, the nation will have 120,000 graduate students, up from about 80,000 in 1984.
