A federal judge on Monday postponed a hearing on whether bail should be set for Earl M. Maas, a Normal Heights man accused of covering up a campaign by one of his sons to drive a black family from their neighborhood through acts of racial terror.
Assistant U.S. Atty. Lynne Lasry told U.S. District Judge Earl Gilliam that more time was needed to gather written materials for the hearing. Gilliam rescheduled the court appearance for Friday.
U.S. Magistrate Harry McCue last week ordered Maas held without bond after Lasry argued that the 51-year-old electrician posed a threat to witnesses in the case.
