Three Italian Cyclists Injured When Car Plows Into Pack of Tour de Suisse Racers

MURTEN, Switzerland — Three Italian cyclists were injured Friday when a motorist ignored a police barrier and drove head-on into a pack of racers in the third leg of the Tour de Suisse.
The race continued after a 30-minute delay, with Italian Paolo Rosola winning the 132.38-mile leg in 5 hours 26 minutes 5 seconds.
Giancarlo Perini, Claudio Chiapucci and Orlando Maini were injured in the accident, which occurred about 36 miles after the start, police said. Chiapucci suffered a broken collarbone and cuts on both legs; Perini, who had led the pack, suffered a concussion, and Maini sustained a cut on his head.
American Greg LeMond was second in the leg, retaining second place in the overall standings. American Andrew Hampsten kept the overall lead.
