Land Mines Kill 17 in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Police said Tamil separatists set land mines that exploded under two buses and a police vehicle today only hours before a national conference opened to discuss the Tamil ethnic crisis. Officials said 17 people were killed and 56 others injured.
Most of the casualties were Sinhalese, and police blamed the blasts on Tamil militants who have been fighting to set up an independent state in the northern and eastern provinces.
