Cigarette smoking has declined to its lowest incidence in the Gallup Poll’s 42-year trend, but at least three adult Americans in 10 still cling to the habit. In the latest (mid-June) Gallup audit, 31% reported having smoked cigarettes during the week prior to being interviewed. Dr. C. Everett Koop, surgeon general of the United States, has set his sights on a “smokeless society” by the year 2000.
