The trial of a San Diego State University football player accused of assaulting gymnast Kurt Thomas ended in a hung jury.
Municipal Court jurors were deadlocked, 9-3, in favor of acquitting Michael Wilder, 22, of the misdemeanor battery charge involving Thomas. Wilder was acquitted on a second battery charge involving Keith Campbell, a member of Thomas’ gymnastics touring company.
The gymnasts testified that Wilder started the fight by arguing with Campbell in a restroom at the Confetti nightclub. Wilder said Campbell sparked the fight by barring his exit from the restroom.
Thomas, 30, said he suffered 16 stitches to his mouth as a result of the fight. He was in San Diego to serve as a commentator for a college cheerleading competition.
